There are great debates happening all the time on whether people should pay for downloading music or not. In the last 5 years the popularity of downloading music has rocketed with CD’s being pushed aside for MP3’s and other digital media. The question is, if you are only downloading a song should you really be made to pay for it? We were lead to believe that CD’s (and going even further back cassettes and vinyl) were so expensive because it was to pay towards the cost of packaging etc. However obviously with a download you don’t have any of these outlay costs. Sure, the cost of a download is less than half the cost of the CD but many people feel that this is still far too pricey.

The problem is with anything it is not easily regulated. That means that it is hard to source free music downloads. It is for this reason alone that much of the music world are against downloading music. However you only have to look at it on the flipside. Justin Bieber was discovered via YouTube. He is now famous all over the USA and Canada and is slowly breaking into the UK and the rest of Europe. This is largely down to the fact that people could download his samples for free. This cause interested and the record labels paid attention. He got signed and the rest is history.

So should we still be able to download music – does it give us a chance to listen to and discover artists we would previously have over looked or should we go back to CD’s and try to ensure everyone pays for their music choices. That is something that is really down to personal preference and is not really something that will ever be agreed on by everyone.
