The ‘I Kissed a Girl’ hitmaker seems to be on the top of the world, with her new album ‘Teenage Dream’ out this summer, and her British fiancé Russell Brand doting over her. This news is just the cherry on the cake for her.

Katy Perry first gained widespread attention in 2007 with the internet hit single ‘Ur So Gay’. Her career breakthrough came in 2008 with the single ‘I Kissed a Girl’.

She has been active since 2001 when at the age of 16 she released her first self-titled gospel rock album under her real name Kate Hudson. The album was unsuccessful given the failure of the label Red Hill under which the album was released.

Over the next few years a couple of her albums got shelved, however, she was noticed in the music press and in 2004, was named ‘The Next Big Thing’ by the Blender magazine. She was signed by Capitol Music Group in early 2007.

Later that year, for creating an image for her while her debut album ‘One of the Boys’ was being recorded, her management released the video to ‘Ur So Gay’ on the internet, followed by the release of a digital EP.

In 2008, the album’s official lead single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was released, which was a runaway success worldwide. It peaked at #1 for seven weeks on Billboard Hot 100. Her second single ‘Hot N Cold’ also was a hit. It was among the top three in many countries around the world, and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. ‘One of the Boys’ reached #9 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. In 2009, ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘Hot N Cold’ were certified three-times platinum by the RIAA with individual sales of over 3 million.
