Once again, it is that time of year again when students will be pulling out the book bags and back packs and heading back to the classroom. It is also the time of year when parents grudgingly pull out the credit cards for school supplies and clothing.
Back to school shopping is the second largest consumer spending event for retailers, just behind Christmas. Just in the United States alone, parents spend an average of $600 on clothing, supplies and electronics. That is a big chunk of change and especially in today’s turbulent economy.
A couple of ways you can save big this back to school shopping season is first to make a list of the essentials and stick to it. We all know that we tend to buy things we do not need when shopping, so avoid letting this happen to you by coming up with a list (together with your child) of those things that absolutely must be purchased like notebooks, pens, pencils and a new jacket. Secondly you should consider buying in bulk. Maybe you and another child’s parents could go together on the cost of bulk notebooks or pads of paper.
When it comes to electronics, consider buying refurbished laptops and graphing calculators. This is a great way to save hundreds of dollars. Stock to those retailers that are well known and trusted when shopping for refurbished electronics and you should walk away with a smile on your face.
Lastly, take along a calculator so you can be sure you are getting a good deal when shopping. By using your calculator, you will be able to tell for sure if buying that twelve pack of binders is a better buy than the two pack that is on sale. Do a bit of planning before heading out, watch for those bargains and come home with some money remaining in your wallet by following these helpful tips!
